Best Free Shopify Apps for Conversions in 2026

The Shopify App Store is overwhelming. Most apps either do one tiny thing or quietly slow your storefront. Here are the five free apps I still install on real client stores in 2026, with what each one is actually good for.

Klaviyo, for Email and SMS Marketing

If you only install one app from this list, install Klaviyo. The free tier covers up to 250 contacts and 500 email sends per month, which is enough to validate the channel before you upgrade.

What makes Klaviyo worth it:

  • Native Shopify integration that pulls in product and order data automatically
  • Pre-built flows (welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back) that you can launch in an afternoon
  • Drag-and-drop email builder that does not require a designer
  • SMS marketing in the same dashboard as email
  • Strong segmentation based on real purchase behavior

The downside is the learning curve. The dashboard hides a lot of power behind a busy interface. Once you push past the first week, the depth pays off.

SEO Image Optimizer (and Page Speed Tools)

Search the app store for "image optimizer" and you will find several free options. The reliable ones compress images automatically, rewrite alt tags from product data, generate JSON-LD structured data, and update the sitemap.

Compressed images are the single biggest win for Shopify speed. Run this on a new store before you do anything else. For the bigger speed picture, I covered the full playbook in Shopify store speed and SEO guide.

A Page Speed App for Preloading

Apps like ROAR or Hyperspeed handle prefetching and lazy-loading optimizations that most themes do not enable by default. They preload the next likely page so it feels instant when a shopper clicks. They lazy-load below-the-fold images automatically.

I treat these as a baseline install on stores where I have already optimized images and pulled out unused apps. They are not a substitute for fixing the actual bloat. They are a finishing layer.

Fontpicker, for Custom Fonts Without Code

Most Shopify themes ship with two or three font options. If you want to use a Google Font, an Adobe Font, or a custom upload, Fontpicker handles it without touching theme code.

The clean implementation matters here. Cheap font-loading apps cause text flash and layout shift, which hurts Core Web Vitals. Fontpicker handles font loading correctly. For brand-conscious stores, this is the difference between "looks generic" and "looks designed."

Instafeed for Instagram Embeds

Social proof on a product page lifts conversions. A live Instagram feed showing your products in real customer settings is one of the easiest social-proof installs you can do.

Instafeed grabs your handle, syncs your latest posts, and gives you a few embed styles to drop into any section. Free tier covers the basics for most stores. Other options exist (EmbedSocial, Foursixty), but Instafeed is the cleanest free pick.

What I Would Skip

A few honorable omissions, on purpose:

  • Free product review apps. Most are bloated. Pay for Judge.me or use Shopify's native review tool.
  • Popup builder apps. Klaviyo and most modern themes already do popups well.
  • Currency converter apps. Shopify Markets handles this natively and faster.
  • One-click upsell apps. Worth paying for the good ones (ReConvert, AfterSell). The free ones drag your checkout.

The pattern: free apps that load fast and integrate cleanly are worth it. Free apps that try to replace a paid tool with a slow workaround cost you more in lost conversions than the paid tool would cost in subscription.

How to Decide What to Install

Before installing any app, ask three questions:

  1. Will I use this every week?
  2. Does it load JavaScript on the storefront, or only in admin?
  3. Is there one bigger app that does this and three other jobs?

If the answer to (1) is no or (3) is yes, skip it. I cover this same triage in my fractional CMO services when I audit client stores.

The Short Version

Klaviyo for marketing. An image optimizer for speed. A prefetch app for the finishing layer. Fontpicker for brand. Instafeed for social proof. Five installs, all free to start, all proven on real stores.
