How to Sell Virtual Products on Shopify: Two Methods

Selling digital products on Shopify is more common every year. Ebooks, courses, templates, presets, audio downloads, and digital art all run through the same checkout that handles physical goods. The platform was built for products you ship, but it handles bits-and-bytes fine if you set it up right.

Here are the two methods that actually work in 2026.

Questions to Answer Before You Start

Before you build the funnel, decide:

  • Is this digital product a standalone offer or an add-on to an existing physical product?
  • Are customers actually asking for it?
  • What is your refund policy on a download they already received?
  • How are you protecting the file from being shared?

The refund and exclusivity questions are the ones founders underestimate. Get them straight before launch.

Method 1: Use an App (Easy Digital Products)

The cleanest path is an app. Easy Digital Products (EDP) is the one I default to. The free tier covers up to 30 digital orders per month, which is enough to validate the offer before you upgrade.

What EDP handles for you:

  • File attachment per product or per variant
  • Customizable download buttons on the order confirmation and email
  • Personalized delivery emails with download links
  • License key generation for software or paid templates
  • Download limits and link expiration for security
  • PDF stamping (paid tier) to discourage sharing

Install EDP, upload your file, attach it to the product, set your delivery rules. The whole setup takes under an hour. For a first-time digital seller, this is the right call.

Other apps worth a look: SendOwl, Digital Downloads (Shopify's own app), Filemonk. They all do the basic job. EDP has the best free tier in 2026.

Method 2: Sell Without an App

If you have one or two simple digital products (a PDF, an ebook), you can skip the app and use native Shopify. The trade is more setup work and less protection.

Step 1: Upload the File

Go to Settings > Files and upload your PDF, image, or zip. Click the link icon to copy the file URL. That URL is your delivery link.

Test it in an incognito browser to confirm it loads.

Step 2: Create the Product

Add the product like any other:

  • Title and SEO description
  • Cover image
  • Price
  • Disable shipping. Uncheck "This is a physical product."
  • Set inventory to "Do not track inventory" so you do not run out.

Step 3: Build the Delivery Automation

This is the part that used to require code. In 2026, Shopify Flow (free on all plans) handles it.

Create a Flow with:

  • Trigger: Order paid
  • Condition: Contains [your digital product]
  • Action: Send email (use the customer's email from the order data, paste the delivery link in the body)

A simple email template:

Thank you for purchasing [PRODUCT NAME]. Click here to download your copy: [LINK]. Save the file to your device. If you have any questions, reply to this email.

Step 4: Test with a $0 Order

Set the product to $0 temporarily, or use the Bogus Gateway to fake a payment. Place a test order. Confirm the email fires with the right link. Reset the price.

Step 5: Add a Refund Policy

At checkout and on the product page, state clearly that digital products are non-refundable once the download link is sent. This single line of copy prevents most chargebacks on digital goods.

Without-App Tradeoffs

The honest list:

Downsides

  • No real protection against link sharing
  • Longer one-time setup vs. clicking install on an app
  • Manual updates if the file ever changes

Upsides

  • One less app loading on your storefront
  • No monthly app fee
  • Full control over the delivery email copy
  • Forces you to learn Shopify Flow, which is useful for ten other things later

For a single-product launch or a creator selling one PDF, the app-free method is fine. For a real digital catalog, install EDP.

Where This Fits in a Bigger Marketing Plan

Digital products have great margins and zero shipping cost. They are also a perfect upsell for physical-product stores. A skincare brand can sell a routines ebook. A fitness coach can sell session bundles. A furniture store can sell a design guide. The Bottom Line

App-based delivery with EDP is the fastest path. App-free with Shopify Flow is doable, cheaper, and good for one-off launches. Either way, sort out your refund and exclusivity policy before the first sale. That single decision saves you the most headaches down the road.
