Best Free SEO Tools for Shopify

SEO software gets expensive fast. Ahrefs is $129 a month. Semrush is $140. For a Shopify store doing under $50k a month, that is a meaningful line item. The good news: the free tiers of those same tools, combined with what Google gives you for free, cover most of what a small store needs.

Here is the stack.

Keyword Research for Free

Semrush free tier lets you run 10 queries a day. That is enough to find your next month of blog topics. Look for keywords with a Keyword Difficulty score between 25 and 40. That sweet spot is where small Shopify stores can actually rank.

Google Trends is free forever. Use it to spot seasonal patterns and rising topics before they get crowded. Compare two related terms side by side to pick which one is gaining momentum.

Google search itself is an underrated keyword tool. Search your seed keyword and scroll to the People Also Ask boxes. Each question is a piece of content waiting to be written. Scroll further to the related searches at the bottom of the page.

Google Search Console tells you what you already rank for. Connect it on day one. Check the Performance report monthly to find queries you rank in positions 5 to 20 for. Those are the pages worth updating because small SEO improvements move them onto page one.

Free Copywriting Tools

Shopify Magic is built into your admin. Click into any product or blog post and hit the Magic button. It generates a draft from your title and metadata. The output is generic; treat it as a starting point.

Rytr has a free tier with 10,000 monthly characters. Good for meta descriptions and short ad copy.

ChatGPT (free tier with GPT-5) handles product descriptions, FAQs, blog outlines. For deeper guidance on which AI tool fits which job, see best AI copywriters for Shopify and Gemini vs ChatGPT.

Claude.ai has a generous free tier and writes longer-form content better than most. Use it for blog drafts where context and tone matter.

Free On-Page SEO Tools

Yoast SEO Shopify app has a free tier that runs on-page checks for your product and blog pages. It flags missing meta descriptions, weak headlines, and keyword density issues.

Schema markup generator at TechnicalSEO.com builds JSON-LD for products, reviews, FAQs, and breadcrumbs. Paste the output into your theme. Google rewards stores with proper structured data.

Free Site Health Tools

Google PageSpeed Insights scores your store on Core Web Vitals. Run it weekly during a speed optimization push.

Microsoft Clarity gives you free session recordings and heatmaps. It is the best free tool for understanding why visitors do not convert. Install it on every store.

Shopify Analyzer runs a free speed audit and tells you exactly which apps or assets are slowing you down.

Free Backlink Checking

Ahrefs' free Backlink Checker gives you the top 100 backlinks for any domain. Run it on your top three competitors and you have a free list of sites that already link to stores like yours.

The Workflow That Works on Free Tools

  1. Open Google Search Console. Find queries you rank 5 to 20 for.
  2. Plug the top three into Semrush free tier. Confirm volume and difficulty.
  3. Read the top three ranking pages for your target query.
  4. Draft an updated version in Claude or ChatGPT.
  5. Edit it personally, add original screenshots and data.
  6. Publish with proper schema markup from TechnicalSEO.com.
  7. Watch the ranking in Search Console over the next 30 days.

That loop costs zero dollars and works.

When to Pay

Upgrade to paid Semrush or Ahrefs when you are publishing more than four posts per month and the time you spend in free-tier limits exceeds the cost of a subscription. For most stores, that is around the $25k MRR mark.
