I Tried Working in VR for a Week: An Honest Failure Report
I tried to do my actual job inside a headset for a week. It was a failure, partly my fault and partly not. Here is what broke, what genuinely worked, and what I would try differently now.
A few years ago I tried to do my actual job inside a VR headset for a week.
It was a failure. Some of that was my fault and some of it was the technology. I still think the experiment was worth running, and the specific ways it broke are more interesting than the conclusion.
The Setup
I used a standalone headset with a virtual desktop application, streaming my actual computer into a virtual environment with multiple large screens.
My work is marketing: writing, spreadsheets, ad platforms, video calls, a lot of switching between applications.
The theory was that infinite screen real estate and no physical distractions would improve focus.
What Broke First
Text clarity. This killed it on day one and never improved.
Reading a spreadsheet at the resolution available through a streamed virtual display was actively unpleasant. Headset displays are sharp in the center and soften toward the edges, so peripheral monitors, which were the entire point, were the hardest to read.
I spent the week moving my head to center whichever window I needed, which is worse than moving my eyes across physical monitors.
Typing. I touch type reasonably and I still made far more errors without being able to see my hands. Passthrough helped and passthrough quality at the time was poor.
Weight and heat. Two hours was the ceiling before genuine discomfort. My workday is not two hours.
Every interruption. Somebody walks in, a phone rings, you need a glass of water. Each one costs a full disconnect and reconnect. In a week of working from home, that happened constantly.
What My Own Mistake Was
I tried to replicate my existing workflow rather than finding the work that suits the medium.
That is the error I now recognize in almost every failed technology adoption, and I wrote about the general version of it in VR in manufacturing. The successful deployments replaced something genuinely bad. I was replacing a setup that worked fine.
I also did it alone. A shared virtual space with colleagues is a different product from a solo virtual office, and I tested the weaker one.
What Genuinely Worked
One thing, and it surprised me.
Single task focus sessions. Writing, with one large virtual screen, no notifications, and nothing else visible. The isolation that made everything else worse made deep writing better.
I got about ninety minutes of unusually good focus per session. That is a real effect and it is the only thing from the experiment I still occasionally use.
Reviewing anything spatial. Looking at a site layout or a 3D model was better than on a monitor, immediately and obviously.
What I Would Do Differently
Stop trying to do everything in the headset. Use it for the two things it is good at and take it off.
Test the collaborative version rather than the solo version, because presence with other people is the thing the medium actually offers.
And set a realistic bar. The question is not whether VR beats a monitor for everything. It is whether it beats a monitor for one specific task often enough to justify the friction.
Where This Landed
The headset is in a drawer. I use it occasionally for a focused writing block and for looking at spatial things.
That is a real but narrow outcome, which is roughly where the whole consumer VR category ended up. I covered why in what happened to the metaverse.

Is Any Kind of Work Actually Better in VR?
Two kinds, in my experience. Focused single-task writing, where the isolation genuinely helps, and reviewing anything with three dimensions, where seeing it at scale beats a monitor immediately. Everything else was worse, and most of it was substantially worse.
The focus effect is real and I still use it occasionally. One large virtual screen, no notifications, nothing else visible, produces about ninety minutes of unusually uninterrupted writing. What is doing the work there is the removal of options rather than anything about virtual reality, and you can get most of the benefit from a distraction-free application on a normal machine.
The spatial review case is the one that genuinely requires the hardware. Looking at a floor plan, a product model, or a site layout at actual scale answers questions that no amount of rotating a model on a screen does. If your work involves physical things, this alone can justify a headset.
What stays worse: anything involving text at volume, anything involving switching between applications, and anything where you might be interrupted. That covers most knowledge work.
The honest framing for anybody considering it: do not evaluate whether VR can replace your desk. Ask whether there is one task you do weekly that would be better, and whether that task is worth the friction of putting on a headset. For most marketers the answer is no, and that is a fine answer.
The experiment was still worth running, which is the part I would defend. Finding out precisely where a technology fails is more useful than an opinion formed from reviews, and it changed how I evaluate everything since. The framework I ended up with is in betting on early tech.
