Most articles about the best AI tools for students are lists of twenty products written by someone who used none of them.

I use AI heavily for research and writing, and I have watched my own kids and a few interns use it for school. Here is the honest version.

The Two Tools That Cover Most of It

A general assistant. Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini. One of these covers most student use cases, and picking between them matters less than people argue about online.

The useful applications are explaining a concept at different levels of difficulty, quizzing yourself, and getting unstuck on a problem. All three work well.

A citation manager with AI search. Tools like Elicit and Consensus search actual academic literature rather than generating plausible-sounding references.

This matters enormously, because general assistants still invent citations. A tool that searches a real paper index and shows you the paper is a different category of thing.

Four More That Earn Their Place

Otter or a native transcription tool for lectures. Transcription is genuinely solved and reviewing a searchable transcript beats rewatching a recording.

Anki with AI generated cards. Spaced repetition works and it has worked for decades. Using an assistant to turn your notes into cards removes the tedious part.

Grammarly or a built in equivalent for the mechanical pass. Useful for catching errors, bad at judging whether the argument is any good.

A code assistant if you are in anything technical. This is the clearest productivity gain of any tool on the list and it is not close.

What Is Not Worth Paying For

Essay generators. The output is mediocre, detection is improving, and more importantly you do not learn anything. The point of the essay is the thinking.

AI note takers that summarize your own notes. The summarizing is the studying. Automating it removes the benefit.

Specialized "study AI" subscriptions. Almost all of them are a wrapper around the same models you can use directly for less money.

The Real Risk

The failure mode is not cheating. It is outsourcing the struggle.

Learning happens in the gap between not understanding and understanding, and that gap is uncomfortable. An assistant that removes the discomfort also removes the learning.

The students I have watched use these well treat the tool as something to argue with. They attempt it first, get it wrong, then ask why. The ones who use it badly ask first and copy.

Same distinction applies to professional work, which is why I keep saying that AI automations need humans with judgment to be worth anything.

What I Would Tell a Student

Pick one general assistant and learn it properly instead of collecting six.

Use it to check your thinking rather than to replace it. Ask it to find the weakest part of your argument. That is the single highest value prompt in school and in work.

Verify anything factual. Models still confidently produce wrong citations and wrong dates, and a professor will catch it faster than you will.

Is Using AI for Schoolwork Cheating?

It depends entirely on what the assignment is measuring, and most institutions have now written policies that say so. Using a model to explain a concept, quiz yourself, or check your reasoning is studying. Using it to produce the artifact you are being graded on is usually not permitted, and more importantly it removes the thing the assignment was for.

The practical line most policies draw is between process and product. Help understanding the material is fine. Generated text submitted as your own work is not. Where it gets genuinely ambiguous is editing, outlining, and brainstorming, and that is where you should ask rather than assume.

Asking is worth doing explicitly. Policies vary by institution, by department, and sometimes by individual instructor, and the penalty for guessing wrong is severe. A one line email at the start of a term settles it.

The part I would emphasize to a student: detection tools are unreliable and you can still be accused. Keeping your drafts, your notes, and your version history is the most effective protection available, and it costs nothing. A document with a visible editing history is very hard to argue with.

The deeper reason to be careful has nothing to do with rules. The struggle of producing something badly and then improving it is where the skill forms. Skipping it produces a transcript and not an education, and that gap shows up later in ways no grade captures.

The habit that separates students who benefit from these tools from students who do not is simple. Attempt the problem first, get it wrong, then ask why. Asking first and copying produces a finished assignment and no learning, and the gap compounds over a degree in ways no single grade reveals.
